Coping with depression and bipolar disorder

While there are many similarities between these two disorders, they are indeed distinct and separate diagnosis. At MediPharm Pharmacy we have worked for year as partners to behavioral health practitioners. It has been our privilege to help people suffering through periods of depression or the chemical imbalances that cause bipolar disorder.

The common factor with both of these conditions is that they have extended periods of depression. These periods are defined by feelings of sadness and hopelessness, tiredness and trouble sleeping. Depression is a common issue in the United States and is treated with a combination of therapy and medication. While it can be a lifelong condition, some forms of depression can be overcome.

Bipolar disorder is also characterized by periods of deep depression, but also includes drastic mood swings. In this other state, the patient often reports feelings of euphoria and energy. They often do not sleep well as their mind races from though to though, trying to accomplish multiple tasks at once. This disorder is commonly referred to as a chemical imbalance and is treated with both medication and therapy. Unfortunately, it is also considered a lifelong condition and discontinuing treatments is not advised unless under strict medical supervision.

The medications commonly used to treat these disorders often have different side-effects for each patient. Speaking with your pharmacist and medical practitioner about the side-effects you are experiencing can help them find a medication that works better for you.
