The cycle of self-isolation and depression is often a self-perpetuating loop that can feel impossible to breakthrough. While there are many factors that can be acting within this cycle, fear, anxiety, feelings of helplessness or feeling misunderstood; Isolation is both a symptom and a cause of depression. Don’t worry about getting outside, but plan to do some chores around the house. Make the bed, do the dishes, vacuum the floors… Something that is small, identifiable, and achievable in a short period of time.
When you step back and look at the results, its is often a great motivational boost. You not only feel better just moving around, but you get a feeling of accomplishment from completing the task. You may even find yourself motivated to start another small task!
Another tip that sounds daunting but doesn’t have to be is to reach out and reconnect with your friends and family. There are so many different ways to contact people, like text messages, phone or video calls and emails… pick one that you are comfortable with and reach out. You will feel better talking with others and sharing your thoughts and emotions with someone else.
Lastly, if you still feel isolated, depresses and can’t seem to break free you should think about calling your doctor, religious counselor or a therapist.
